If you’re a fan of gold mining shows, you’ll love “Yukon Gold”. This new documentary series for History Television Canada, National Geographic Channels International and USA, follows four camps of real miners as they risk it all to strike pay dirt. I spent 2-months in the Yukon shooting and directing with one of the show’s main characters, “Big” Al McGregor. It was a gruelling shoot keeping-up with mega machines and larger-than-life characters obsessed with gold fever. Although my job was to capture the challenges and realities of plaster mining, it was also an eye-opening experience to catch a glimpse of the vibrant Klondike culture and witness the natural beauty of Canada’s Great North. Check-out the trailer and the series here: http://www.yukongoldtv.com/

For the first time in my career, I’ve been emotionally compelled to direct and edit a project where I was not involved in the shooting or field production. It’s the inspiring story of Mike and Chantal Schauch and what their team of trekkers discovered on a journey into Nepal’s remote valley of Phu. Their story is reminiscent of my own month-long experience in Nepal back in November 1997: a climbing adventure eclipsed by the enchanting mystique of the local people.

I’m proud and humbled to lend my story-telling talents to their cause. I hope this short film will offer viewers both a glimpse into a faraway place as well as a focal point for contemplating cultures on the brink of extinction.

–

This is the official trailer for Beyond the Gates of Phu (2012), an 18 min documentary by Sean F. White and Climb For Change Enterprises Inc., which follows the journey of an adventure seeking entrepreneur and mountaineer with dreams of climbing in Nepal since childhood, and his wife, a soul-searching consultant ready to escape the western world to find new space and healing. They venture with their three friends, a photographer, a musician, and a nature artist, deep into the Himalayas of Nepal, close to the Tibetan border. Exploring an ancient Buddhist mountain culture, the team discovers a deeper purpose to their journey – one that would change their lives forever.

My life as a filmmaker has been a journey which has blessed me with the privilege of seeing some of the most surreal and timeless places on the planet. These images of our Sacred Earth set to music are my way of sharing some of the magic that I’ve experienced along the way…

Full details and locations shots-by-shot: www.TERRA-SACRA.com

“Terra Sacra” ~ Latin for Sacred Earth.

Six years in the making… seven continents… 24 countries.

Terra Sacra is a short film featuring time lapse sequences of remote landscapes and ancient monuments from around the globe. These images were photographed during my assignments and personal travels between 2006-2012.

Inspired by Ron Fricke’s Baraka, I combined my favourite shots from these various trips into a brief non-narrative film that touches on a them close to my heart: Sacred Earth.

The visuals are driven by an original score by composer Roy Milner. The six-minute film is a journey through three distinct Acts: (I) Primordial Earth (II) Past meets Present and (III) Eternal Universe.

This film is a personal project to share the beauty and awe I witnessed at these locations. I hope viewers will be moved by the intangible power of our Terra Sacra.

Here’s a the short film I created for PhotoSensitive’s exhibit “Kids Who Can” exhibit featuring kids with disabilities at Camp Shawnigan on Vancouver Island. I’m very proud to have participated in this project with my wife Deddeda and fellow photojournalists across Canada. Thank to the amazing Easter Seals staff for their dedication and enthusiasm and big hugs to all the kids – you are stars in our hearts!

Check out the full project: http://www.eastersealskids.com/

Music by Bill Bourne courtesy Cordova Bay Records.

I tried to create a visual poem / dream sequence. The film is like a playing memory focussing on the positive elements of what the kids experience at the Easter Seals camp. I basically wanted to capture and convey the pure and simple essence of the project: beautiful kids having a great time at camp.

The project has a special meaning for me because my sister, Desa, is severely mentally and physical handicapped and requires 24-hour care. She lived at the Queen Alexandra Hospital for Children in Victoria until she was 16. My family went to visit her every Sunday and we often spent long afternoons in the summer at the hospital. My brother and I grew up surrounded by and playing with disabled children. I remember the Easter Seals bus and day camps that would take place on the playgrounds outside the hospital and have fond memories of these kids and their families enjoying the sunshine. The film I made is in a way, a reflection of those memories.

My sister Desa is now 37 years old. She lives at my parent’s home and has a dedicated rotating staff of live-in caregivers. Her life and the aura of love that surrounds her is a constant inspiration for all who know her. Participating in this project has been a deep and moving experience. It’s been an opportunity for me, in my own way, to finally give back and say thank you.

In addition to my role as the series cinematographer and 3D stereographer for Battle Castle, I was also tasked to shoot high-resolution stereoscopic 3D photos from our locations in the UK, France, Poland, and Syria. I rendered this gallery of stereoscopic photography using the Dubois Optimized technique in Adobe Photoshop. Although the colours are not true to reality, this techniques improves the overall comfort of viewing the images by reducing ghosting and other retinal discomfort common with standard red/cyan images.

The original images are 5K resolution per eye. They’ve been resized to 2K for faster downloading and viewing on the web. View them all HERE

Technical Notes:

I shot with either a pair of Canon 5D Mark II’s or a pair of Canon 7D’s with the cameras set to their highest resolution. Most of the images were shot with a side-by-side rig with our customized stereo remote trigger for perfect sync of the stills capture. The only exceptions are the interior shots at Dover Castle where I used a single Canon 5D Mark II on a slider bar for greater control of the interaxial distances (the single camera technique only works for static subjects and not recommended for exterior location work). The matching LEFT and RIGHT eye images were then converged and rendered into a 3D anaglyphic composite in Adobe Photoshop using the anaglyph Dubois technique described here:

There are stand alone application out there for converging 3D stills, some with option for Dubois Optimized, but I haven't found any that work on a Macintosh platform and offer the image control I'm accustomed to in Photoshop.
Hosted by Dan Snow, Battle Castle brings to life mighty medieval fortifications and the epic sieges they resist: clashes that defy the limits of military technology, turn empires to dust, and transform mortals into legends. I was hired by Parallax Film Productions as the DOP for all six episodes. We shot on location in England, France, Syria, Spain, Poland, and Wales. Re-enactments were filmed in Vancouver, Canada. If you like stories about feuding kings and bloody battles, you’ll enjoy this!
